1 kilo of drugs, 3 guns and 30 bullets found hidden in wheelchair at Kyrenia port: Two arrested

A man in a wheelchair and his mother were arrested in an operation carried out at Kyrenia Tourism Port on Monday after 1 kilo of drugs, 3 guns and 30 bullets were found hidden in his wheelchair.

The suspect named only as BU and his mother MT, were identified and arrested while entering the country during a police operation tagged Nokta Operation carried out jointly by the Lefkcosia and Kyrenia Police Departments and the Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Department teams at the Kyrenia Tourism Port at around 8:30am on Monday July 15.

The suspect was taken to court on Tuesday.

Police said they seized 3 9 mm handguns, 3 empty magazines and 30 9 mm live bullets in a battery-powered wheelchair used by the suspect named BU, and approximately 1 kilogram of Methamphetamine type drugs wrapped in stretch nylon on the outside and kept in newspaper and a bag on the inside in 2 separate packages.

Police said nothing illegal was detected in the search conducted on the same day by a police team from the Narcotics Department at their residence on Mehmet Kurt Street in Girne Şht.

Police noted that in the first statement given by the suspects, they said that they received the gun and drugs in question from Mersin Taşucu on the order of a person and that they brought drugs 7 more times on different dates.

Police said they received information that the suspects had also smuggled 25 kilos of drugs into the country in 2023.

Noting that the investigation is ongoing, that there are camera footages to be examined and statements to be taken, the police said that a person who was determined to have directed the suspects was also wanted and requested that they be detained for 3 days.
