UK issues Red Alert for tourists travelling to Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, and Spain

British tourists have been cautioned as the UK issued a “red alert” for those traveling to Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, and Spain.

The British Foreign Office has revised its travel advisories for these popular holiday destinations in light of an impending heat wave expected to bring record-high temperatures to the region, Kibris Postasi reports.

UK travellers have been urged to stay alert and take necessary precautions as temperatures are set to soar across these European hotspots. This warning comes as Brits face an exceptionally hot summer, particularly in Cyprus, where temperatures are predicted to reach unprecedented levels.

The alert follows extreme weather conditions that recently affected Majorca and Austria during the height of the holiday season.

The current heat wave, driven by hot and dusty winds from North Africa, is impacting the region. Greek state television meteorologist Panos Giannopoulos remarked, “This heat wave will be historic“.

Highlighting the unusual nature of the weather, Panos added, “In the 20th century, we never experienced a heat wave before June 19. However, in the 21st century, we’ve seen a few, but never before June 15“.

Meanwhile, according to Birmingham Live, severe flooding in Majorca disrupted operations at Son Sant Joan airport, Spain’s third-largest airport. The airport operator Aena AENA announced that operations were temporarily halted for safety reasons.

In Turkey, temperatures were in the mid-30s Celsius, while in Greece, they soared to 45 degrees.
