Sudanese students assaults police officer who intervened for causing public disturbance

Two individuals who were reportedly drunk and causing public disturbance while shouting in the neighborhood of Hamitköy on Monday night were arrested by the police for attacking the police who tried to intervene.

The individuals, BL and his girlfriend, SAMA, both from Sudan were arrested on Anıttepe street in Hamitköy at around 12:15am on Tuesday June 11.

Police said the pair who were under the influence of alcohol were shouting on the streets of Hamitköy and violently attacked police officers who went to the scene following a complaint.

Police said SAMA slapped a police officer and spat in his face during the arrest.

They were brought to the Lefkosia district court on Tuesday on charges of "preventing a police officer from carrying out its duty", "drunkenness", "causing disturbance and inappropriate behavior".

Police told the court that the suspects were found in a drunken state, shaking their hands and arms randomly, shouting loudly, and acting in an inappropriate manner. He stated that they were arrested due to their physical condition.

Police said after informing the suspect SAMA that she was under arrest, she prevented the arrest and slapped the police officer in the face once with her right hand and spit on his face, beating the police officer and preventing him from duty.

Stating that the investigation was completed and that the suspect SAMA was a student, the police requested that she be released on bail.

The prosecutor told the court that there has been a serious increase in violent incidents against the police in recent days and requested that the suspect be tried without arrest on both cash and surety bail.

The judge released the suspect on bail on the condition that she deposit a cash guarantee of 20,000 TL, bring a reliable guarantor, a TRNC citizen to sign a surety bond worth 250,000 TL, banned from going abroad until her trial report to the nearest police station once a week.
