Student arrested for illegal residency after visiting police station to obtain document

A student who was found living in north Cyprus without a resident permit after going to the police to obtain a document has been detained for 20 days on court order. 

The individual, ABLP, a Congolese nationals was identified and arrested at around 1:25pm on Friday June 21 when she visited the Lefkosia Police immigration department to obtain an entry-exit document.

She was brought to the Lefkosia district court again on Tuesday June 25 charged with illegal residency.

Police told the court that the student was determined to have been living illegally in north Cyprus without a resident permit for a total of 193 days since December 11, 2023.

Police stated that a statement was obtained about the suspect as a result of the investigation conducted by the Lefkcosia Police Department Immigration Department.

The police noted that the investigation was completed and that the suspect would continue to commit the crime of "Residing Without Permission" in the TRNC if she was released, and requested that he be detained in the Central Prison until her cases were discussed.
