Pakistan national killed, several injured in drunk driving accident in north Cyprus

A man died following a traffic accident involving a drunk driver in the early hours of this morning in Gemikonağı, north Cyprus.

According to the Police Press Officer’s report, the accident took place on Ecevit Street in Gemikonağı at around 2:00 am on Saturday June 15.

The driver of a vehicle, 22-year-old Mehmet Eren Erdoğan, was driving under the influence of alcohol and at excessive speed when he lost control of his vehicle. Due to his recklessness, the car veered off the road and struck two Pakistani nationals, 26-year-old Naveed Akbar and 22-year-old Sajidullah Khan, who were sitting on a bench on the pavement.

The vehicle, continuing moving uncontrollably from the impact, hit a lighting pole and then fell 3.40 metres into the sea. Naveed Akbar, who was seriously injured in the accident, was taken to Cengiz Topel Hospital but could not be saved despite all attempts to save his life. 

Mehmet Eren Erdoğan, who was injured in the accident, along with 21-year-old Aysu Demir, a passenger in the car, and the other young man sitting on the bench, Sajidullah Khan, were also taken to Cengiz Topel Hospital. While Erdoğan and Demir were discharged after treatment, Khan remains under observation.

Following the incident, Mehmet Eren Erdoğan, the intoxicated driver responsible for the accident, was arrested. The police investigation into the incident is ongoing.
