Man breaks into dead neighbor's house, steals gun, mobile phones and others

Police has identified and arrested a man who broke into the house of a dead neighbor located in Lefkosia and stole several items.

The suspect, HT, a Turkish Cypriot was arrested on Tuesday June 11 after he was found to have stolen many items from his neighbor's house in Lefkosia. The said neighbor passed away at the age of 84.

The suspect was taken to court on Wednesday on charges of "breaking and entry", "theft", "intentional damage" and "unlawful possession of a firearm".  

Police told the court that the incident occurred at around 1:00am on June 11, 2024 when the suspect entered the house after damaging the wooden kitchen door of the residence belonging to 84-year-old Emete Şahintepe, who died in Lefkosia, with a hard object. 

Police stated that the suspect stole a double-breasted shotgun, two mobile phones, a cash box, a coffee machine, a battery charger and a hand blender, which were kept under the bed.

Police stated that nothing illegal was detected in the search carried out in accordance with the court order at the suspect's residence but that the items in question were detected and found during the search made in the trunk of the vehicle used by the suspect.

Stating that the arrested suspect gave a voluntary statement, the police requested that he be detained for 2 days for investigation purposes.
