Foreign national arrested for illegal residency

A foreign national who was found to be staying in the north of Cyprus without a residence permit, was arrested and taken to court. 

The suspect, a Pakistani national was detected and arrested in Lefkosia at around 1:40am on Monday June 24. He was taken to court on the same day.

Police said he was found to have been in the north of Cyprus without a residence permit for 541 days since September 30, 2022, during the immigration check.

Police said investigation was completed and requested that he be sent to the central prison for a period not exceeding 20 days until his cases were heard.

The suspect, who spoke after the police, said that he worked in a restaurant and that his boss told him he would get a work permit, but he did not.

The judge ordered that the suspect be sent to prison for a period not exceeding 20 days and also ordered legal proceedings to be initiated against the workplace that employed the suspect as unregistered workers.
