Three brothers assaults police officers for intervening in a fight in Gönyeli

Three brothers reportedly attacked police officers who went to intervene in the fight between two families in Gönyeli on Saturday.

The suspects, AK, MK and Hk who are all Turkish Cypriots at around 9:10pm on Saturday May 1 assaulted police officers who tried to intervene in a fight between AK and his ex-wife ZK about seeing their son from their marriage and who would drive the car they bought.

They were arrested and taken to the Lefkosia District Court on Sunday charged with the crime of "violence against women", "assaulting a police, preventing a police officer from carrying out his duties", "fight" and "causing public disturbance".

Police told the court that the suspect who was engaged in an argument with his ex-wife ZK about seeing their son from their marriage and who would drive the car they bought hit his ex-wife during the fight.

Police stated that following this incident, the suspect's relatives and his ex-wife's relatives gathered at the scene.

Two individuals, MK and HK who are brothers to the suspect went to the scene to confront ZK's relatives, AE, SA, FA, on the grounds that they had beaten their brother.

This caused the incident to escalate and a report was made to the Gönyeli Police Station and a team went to the scene.

Police said MK and HK hit the police officers who intervened in the incident by holding their hands, pushing them and hitting their chests, and prevented them from their duties.

The suspect AK, MK and HK were arrested with force.

Police said an investigation was launched, and that there were statements to be examined and camera footage would be taken, and requested that they be detained for one day in the first place.

Speaking after the police, the suspects MK and HK claimed that they were innocent while AK claimed that he had not beaten his ex-wife.
