Tashkent Nature Park issues warning about the Cyprus Viper: What you need to know

The Tashkent Nature Park in north Cyprus has made an important warning about the Cyprus Viper (Macrovipera lebetina lebetina), known as "Gufi" on the island of Cyprus, and explained what needs to be known.

This viper, the only poisonous snake species in Cyprus, is perfectly adapted to the Mediterranean climate and is endemic to the island and is under protection. Although it is a source of great fear among the public, the Cyprus viper is not as dangerous as it seems.

While it is recommended to consult the nearest health institution in case of Cyprus viper bites, these snakes do not tend to harm people unless threatened. Although it is poisonous, it avoids contact with humans and stays away from creatures it does not consider prey. When they feel threatened, they remain motionless and wait for the threatening element to go away...

In the statement made by Tashkent Nature Park, it was emphasized that when encountering a Cyprus viper in nature, the only thing to do is to walk away without disturbing the snake. There has been no case of anyone losing their life as a result of a Cyprus viper attack in the last 70 years. When you encounter a Cyprus viper in your garden, just call 1190 Wildlife Support Line.

Tashkent Nature Park emphasizes the importance of living in peace with nature by protecting this rare and beautiful creature of Cyprus.
