Student breaks into invitro fertilization center in north Cyprus, steals thousands of foreign currencies
A foreign national who was arrested for breaking into a hospital and stealing thousands of foreign currencies was found to be living in north Cyprus illegally.
The suspect named only as OMN, 26 was arrested on Tuesday May 7 after the matter was reported to the police.
The suspect is accused of stealing thousands of foreign currencies in Dollars, Pounds and Euros from an invitro fertilization center operating on Martyr Mustafa Ahmet Ruso Street in Lefkcosia and hid it in the old State Laboratory. He was identified from a camera footage and arrested.
The suspect, who was found to have been living illegally in the north Cyprus was taken to court in Lefkosia on Wednesday May 8.
Explaining the findings of the investigation in court, police stated that the suspect named only as OMN entered an invitro fertilization center in Lefkosia on Tuesday night by removing the iron railings on the window and entering through the glass section, causing damage worth 7,500 TL.
The suspect then entered the workplace and stole 8,100 Euros, 13,915 Dollars and 7,355 Pounds in cash found inside in a wooden drawer.
Police said that within the scope of the investigation launched regarding the issue, 1 crowbar and 1 iron rod, which the suspect used to break the window and remove the railings, were found at the scene of the incident and seized as evidence.
The suspect was identified from the camera footage examined on the same day and arrested in accordance with the pending order obtained from the Lefkosia District Court.
Police stated that the suspect confessed his crime during the interrogation and said that the money he stole was hidden in the courtyard of the Old State Chemistry Laboratory. He showed the place where he hid it, and that the money was detected and seized as evidence.
Police stated that the suspect also showed that the gloves and clothes he used on the day of the incident were on the roof of the apartment where he resided, and that there were signs on the gloves and clothes.
Police also stated that the suspect had resided in the north of Cyprus without permit for a total of 702 days since June 5, 2022.
The police have completed the part of the investigation carried out regarding the issue that could affect the suspect and requested that he be given a guarantee that the court deems appropriate in order to be present at his case.
The judge who evaluated the testimony given in court ordered the suspect to remain in prison for a period not exceeding 3 months in order to be present for his trial in the future.
