Student arrested for illegal residency as police raid university for students without permit
A student who was arrested for living in north Cyprus without a resident permit has been sent to prison for 20 days until trial.
The individual, named only as SM, a Zimbabwean student in north Cyprus was identified and arrested by Turkish Cypriot police during checks carried out within the Cyprus International University campus at around 8:30pm on Friday May 24.
He was taken to the Lefkosia district court on Tuesday May 28.
Police told the court that during immigration check carried out by the police on the suspect, it was determined that the suspect had been in the country without permit for 178 days since September 30, 2023.y
Police said it was confirmed in the investigation conducted by the Immigration Department and in the statement obtained that he was not allowed to reside in the country.
Noting that the investigation was completed, the police demanded that the suspect be detained in prison for a period not exceeding 20 days until his cases are heard.
In a similar development, the police announced that three individuals were identified and arrested for living in north Cyprus without a resident permit on Tuesday night.
