Man who was sentenced to 7 years in prison in Turkey, was detected in Kyrenia north Cyprus

A Turkish man who was sentenced to 7 years in prison in Gaziantep, Turkey was found to be living in Kyrenia, north Cyprus.

The suspect, Murat Günman, who was sentenced to 7 years in prison by the Turkey-Gaziantep High Criminal Court in 2022 for the crime of intentional injury committed in 2006 was found living in Kyrenia, north Cyprus on Saturday, May 4.

He was arrested and detained with request for his extradition to Turkey. 

Police told the court that in the light of the letter received from the Gaziantep Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was reported that the suspect was in TRNC and that his extradition was requested. Police stated that the suspect was identified and arrested in Kyrenia the previous day.

Police noted that the suspect will be extradited in accordance with the extradition agreement between Türkiye and TRNC stating that they needed time to complete the extradition process of the suspect and requested that he be detained for 3 days. 

Speaking after the police, the suspect said, “I have been here for 12 years, my job and my family are here. "I did not expect such a decision to be made against me after so many years". 

He was detained for one month in order to complete the extradition procedures.
