Man almost stole several supermarkets dry in north Cyprus

A man who almost emptied several supermarkets shelves by shop lifting goods worth over 15,000TL has been detained on the order of a court in north Cyprus.

The suspect named only as RRA, 38 reportedly went on a stealing spree at the Hocanın Market operating in Gönyeli and other markets between April 16 to May 26.

Police said the suspect was identified from camera footage and arrested following an investigation launched into the theft incidents. 

He was arraigned at the Lefkosia district court on Monday May 27 charged with theft.

Police said various grocery products including; several brands of whiskey, 2 coffees and 2 condoms stolen from Hocanın Market worth 15,509 TL and 100 items belonging to other markets were found and seized during the search carried out by the police at his residence in in Kyrenia.

During the interrogation of the suspect regarding the issue, he verbally stated that he stole whiskey and cold coffee from the market in question. 

Police also noted that the suspect could not give a reasonable explanation for the grocery items found in his home.

Police noted that the suspect's mobile phone was also taken for examination and said that an investigation should be made into where he obtained the grocery items found in his home. 

Police stated that the investigation continues in two districts and requested that the suspect be detained for 3 days.
