Student who stole yoghurt, chips, ketchup and oats from a market in Lefkosia found to be living illegally in north Cyprus
A student who was arrested for stealing goods worth 400 TL from a market in Lefkosia has been found to living illegally in the country.
The suspect named only as JT was arrested on Wednesday, April, 17 for stealing from a market operating in Küçük Kaymaklı in Lefkosia. Further investigation revealed that he has been living illegally in north Cyprus.
He was taken to the Lefkosia district court on Thursday, April, 18 on charges of "theft" and "illegal residency".
Police who testified against the suspect in court said the suspect was arrested for stealing "fruit yoghurt, chips, ketchup and diet oats" from a market in Lefkosia.
Police said the suspect first went to a market operating in Küçük Kaymaklı as a customer on Monday, where he took goods worth 400 TL in a bag and left the market without paying.
Police said the suspect was detected and arrested when he entered the same market as a customer again on April 17.
Police noted that a search was made at the suspect's house on April 18 where the chip he stole was found and taken as evidence.
The police noted that during the immigration check conducted during the investigation phase, it was determined that the suspect had been staying in the north of Cyprus without a residence permit for 143 days.
Stating that the investigation was completed and that the suspect had no legal status, the police requested that he be detained in prison without a sentence for a period not exceeding one month.
