TRNC government reaches agreement with the Bakers union: Set bread price at 13.5 TL

Following a back and fort decision by the government of north Cyprus and Bread producers association, the price of Ekmek bread has now be set at 13.50 TL.

TRNC Minister of Economy and Energy Olgun Amcaoğlu on Monday announced that at the meeting they held with the Bakers Association today, an agreement was reached on the price of a 200 gram loaf of bread to be sold for 13.5 Turkish Liras.

Amcaoğlu, in his statement through the ministry press office, stated that as a result of the technical meetings they held with the Bakers' Association, they addressed the contraction and other structural problems in the sector. Amcaoğlu also stated that at the meeting, it was discussed that improvements should be made in some basic issues in order to increase the decreasing market share in the bakery products and bakery sector and to ensure that the sector operates more efficiently, and that by this method, the price of bread can be kept at a more reasonable price.

Amcaoğlu noted that as a result of the meetings, it was decided that the ministry would carry out technical studies on 6 issues and share them with the Bakers Association as soon as possible, and emphasized that a consensus was reached on the price of 200 g loaf of bread to be sold for 13.5 TL.

Olgun Amcaoğlu added that the ministry and the Bakers' Association will hold new technical meetings and submit a report to the Prime Ministry in order to move the industry to a healthier point.

Recall that last week, the Bakers' Association raised the price of bread from 13 TL to 15 TL but the government countered the increase and reduced it back to 13 TL. The Association however refused to accept the reduction and insisted that its members will continue to sell for 15 TL.
