Man steals mobile phones, wallets and passports from Syrian refugees in north Cyprus

A man who allegedly stole wallets, passports and mobile phones belong to 6 refugees, who were secretly smuggled into north Cyprus in trailer from Turkey has been detained by Turkish Cypriot police.

The suspect AA, a Turkish Cypriot was arrested and taken to court on Monday, Feb., 19.

Police said on February 5, 2024, 6 Syrian refugees aged between 15 and 40, were illegally transported into the TRNC in a trailer of a truck used by one Şahin Perde from Kyrenia Port. 

They were then taken to Lefkosia where the suspect received them in the Kırklar region.

Police said the refugees handed their mobile phones, wallets and passports over to the suspect.

They were detected at the border and arrested. 

The refugees filed a complaint saying that the suspect stole their mobile phones, wallets and passports.

In addition to the human trafficking investigation carried out against the suspect in Kyrenia, an investigation was also launched into the theft issue that occurred in Lefkosia.

Police stated that there were signs that they were being sought and statements that needed to be taken, and requested that the suspect be detained for 3 days.
