Man arrested in north Cyprus for pulling knife on barman

A 32-year-old man was arrested in north Cyprus on Thursday after allegedly pulling a knife on a barman.

The incident happened at around 1.00am on Thursday, Feb., 2024 in front of the Tren Bar in Ortaköy.

The suspect, BA, an Azerbaijan national reportedly got into a disagreement with the 22-year-old barman over the price of his order, before taking out the knife, waving it from side to side, and shouting loudly.

He was arrested and was found to have been under the influence of alcohol. 

A a background check found that he was residing illegally in north Cyprus for 77 days since November 30, 2023.

He was taken to the Lefkosia distinct court on charges of "illegally carrying a knife", "illegal residency", "drunkenness and inappropriate behavior".

The police requested that the suspect be sent to prison as an unconstitutional detainee for a period not exceeding 30 days. 

The suspect, who spoke after the police, claimed that he did not fight because of the account and said, “I did not wave the knife around. They found it in my pocket. "I want to work and pay my penalty," he said.
