Man arrested at Ercan airport in north Cyprus, one year after theft incident

An Iranian national was on Thursday sent to prison for stealing his ex-roommate's belongings and breaking his laptop.

The incident happened on March, 6, 2023 in Gönyeli when the suspect, MD, an Iranian national stole his ex-roommate's belongings and also broke his laptop.

He was arrested on Wednesday, Feb., 21 at Ercan airport in North Cyprus and taken to the Lefkosia District Court on Thursday on charges of "breaking a house" and "stealing from a residence".

Police in a court statement said on March 6, 2023, the suspect and an unidentified male person entered the residence of his former roommate, Amir Muhammed Heydari located in Gönyeli by opening the unlocked door on the balcony.

They took 1 black pot, 1 knife, 1 mixer, 1 Housberg. They also stole a brand iron and a Huawei brand mobile phone.

The suspect then deliberately broke and damage an Acer laptop computer before leaving.

Police said the items in question were found by the complainant while the suspect was walking on the street after the incident on the same day, and were taken back and handed over to the police.

Stating that the incident was brought to their knowledge on March 9, 2023, a pending order was obtained against the suspect from the Lefkcosia District Court on the same day.

Police said that the suspect was detected and arrested when he wanted to exit Ercan Airport on Wednesday February 21, 2024.

Stating that there was a person wanted regarding the issue and that there was a possibility that the suspect would affect the investigation if he was released, the Police requested an additional day of detention for the suspect, who also does not have a resident permit in the TRNC.
