First deep brain stimulation carried out in North Cyprus
A “Deep Brain Stimulation” surgical therapy was performed on a patient with Parkinson’s disease at the Lefkoşa Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu hospital in north Cyprus.
It’s the first time such a procedure was performed in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
The Minister of Health Hakan Dinçyürek on Thursday announced the news of the procedure aimed at eliminating the involuntary movements of Parkinson’s patient, allowing them to return to completely normal, voluntary movements.
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical procedure that uses implanted electrodes and electrical stimulation to treat movement disorders associated with Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia and other neurological conditions.
Dinçyürek said that the procedure performed on a 62-year-old female patient was successfully carried out by doctors at the Lefkoşa Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital and that she was doing well.
Emphasizing the importance of performing such a surgery in the TRNC, Dinçyürek noted that similar operations were only performed in a handful of hospitals in Türkiye and thanked everyone who contributed to the surgery.
