TRNC must stop issuing citizenships out as population hit 1 million

A TRNC member of parliament and owner of Girne American University has called on the government to stop issuing citizenship to foreigners as the population of north Cyprus exceeds 1 million. 

Democratic Party (DP) General Secretary and, Kyrenia Member of Parliament, Serhat Akpınar in a live broadcast on Thursday, made important statements about citizenship, planning and population of north Cyprus.

Noting that thousands of people who came to TRNC 5-10 years ago were waiting to become citizens, Akpınar said, "Citizenships must be stopped very quickly."

Underlining that this should be prevented and should be done immediately, Akpınar said, "The government needs to make such a decision immediately."

Akpınar also noted that residence arrangements should be made and said, “If people have invested or bought a house, arrangements must be made accordingly. 

"They should not have the right to vote and be elected, even if they have a residence at the local government level," he said.

“Other than that, we have now reached 1 million population, not 400,000 or 700,000. Very serious measures must be taken. "The process regarding citizenship should be stopped," said Akpınar, adding that action should be taken immediately.

“Our population needs to be determined in order to properly manage the processes of all kinds of criminal incidents, to support the police force we need, and to carry out health reforms,” he concluded.
