Student who told a woman he met on the street of north Cyprus that she is beautiful detained for three days by Turkish Cypriot police. 

The suspect, named only as M.A, an Arab student in North Cyprus, at around 11:00am on Sunday, Dec., 31, on Bedreddin Demirel Street in Lefkosia while driving in a vehicle, followed a woman who was walking on the street for a while, recorded her with his mobile phone, then approached her and verbally harassed her.

He was arrested and taken to the Lefkosia judicial court on charges of sexual harassment and violation of privacy following a complaint by the suspect.

Police officer who testified against him in court told the court that the suspect harassed a woman named N.M, who was walking on the road on foot, after following her on the street for a while, and then stopped her and said, "Mashallah, you are so beautiful." 

Police noted that a video image of the woman in question was detected in the examination of the suspect's mobile phone. 

The suspect, who spoke after the police, claimed that he was innocent and said, “I have never seen prison before. "I am innocent, I am a student here,"

Police stated that the investigation initiated regarding the issue is continuing and that there are camera images to be examined and statements to be taken and demanded that he be detained initially for 3 days.

The suspect who was brought back to court again on Wednesday, Jan, 3, 2024, was released on bail.

Noting that the investigation was completed, the police stated that the suspect was studying at the faculty of dentistry in the country and had a student permit.

The police requested that the suspect be released on bail with an appropriate condition. 

Evaluating the case, the judge emphasized the widespread and seriousness of the crimes allegedly committed and decided that the suspect should be tried without detention on the condition that a cash guarantee of 30,000 TL is deposited and a guarantor signs a surety bond of 300,000 TL.
