Student involved in accident found to be living illegally in north Cyprus

A student who was involved in a traffic accident that occurred in Gonyeli was arrested after it was determined that he was living in north Cyprus without a resident permit.

The traffic accident happened at around 3:20am on Tuesday, January, 30 along Ahmet Mutallip Street in Ortaköy close to Etik Hospital road junction when the driver of a vehicle carelessly entered the road and crashed into another vehicle.

He was arrested and summoned to Gönyeli Police Station during investigation.

Police said during investigation, it was determined that the suspect has been residing in north Cyprus without a residence permit for a total of 487 days since September 30, 2022.

Police stated that it was necessary to investigate why the suspect was in the country even though he had no legal status.

Police said that the accident caused by the suspect resulted in serious material damage and an investigation was launched and demanded that he be detained for 3 days on court order so he could not affect the investigation if released.
