Prisoners in south Cyprus prisons go on hunger strike, demand end of war in Gaza

50 inmates at the Central Prisons in south Cyprus have started a hunger strike with their central demand being to end the genocide against the Palestinian people perpetrated by the state of Israel.

According to report by Greek Cypriot daily, philenews, the inmates, originating from Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Azerbaijan, and other Arab countries, allege that the international community and Cypriot authorities are indifferent to the fact that the Israeli army kills women, children, and the elderly, using the fight against Hamas as a pretext.

They emphasize that they do not identify with Hamas but support the struggle of the Palestinian people for freedom and human rights.

In addition to their main demand, the strikers denounce the prolonged periods of their detention as detainees without being informed of the reasons for not being released until the trial of their case.

They also seek equal treatment and the cessation of adverse discrimination against them, demanding equal treatment with European inmates who enjoy the benefit of open prisons.
