One of murder suspects arrested over the murder of Turkish Cypriot woman faints in court

Two Cameroon nationals who were arrested this week in connection with the murder of Turkish Cypriot woman, Ayça Alav were brought back to court again on Friday as one of them fainted in court.

The two suspects, named only B.G.K, 32 and V.S.M.T, 32 are facing accusation over the murder of Turkish Cypriot woman, Ayça Alav, 45, one of the owners of Alav Döviz located in Lefkosia city center in an incident that happened on December, 22, 2023.

The suspects who escaped to south Cyprus after the incident were arrested in the village of Pile on January, 8, 18 days after the murder

They were brought back to court again on Friday, January, 12 following a 3-day detention period. Police told the court that both suspects gave voluntary statements containing confessions. During the 3 days that the suspects were detained, many people were questioned and statements were taken from 5 people.

Police stated that the suspect V.S.M.T gave a second statement and described the murder and robbery in detail.

The suspect were checked by a doctor three times and that they will also be checked by Barış Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital.

Police stated that the suspects were given a lawyer's form, but they said they had no money and did not have a lawyer.

Noting that the investigation was continuing, the police stated that there were signs sought, statements to be taken and camera footage to be examined, and requested an additional detention period of 7 days.

One of the suspects, B.G.K who was given the right to speak in court, said that he did not have money but wanted a lawyer.

The suspect, V.S.M.T, stated that he told everything to the police and wanted to reach his family.

While the judge was about to announce her decision regarding the request for additional detention time, when V.S.M.T fainted. For this reason, the judge took a short break during the hearing.  

The suspect came to his senses after a while with the help of people around him.

After his condition improved, the judge held the hearing again and decided to keep the suspects in custody for 7 days.
