Man attacks ex girlfriend with a knife in north Cyprus for dating someone he knows

A man who stabbed and injured his ex-girlfriend and friend in Gemikonağı, north Cyprus because she went into a relationship with someone from his circle has been detained by the police. 

The suspect named only as F.Y, a resident of Prime Apartment 7 in Gemikonağı, at around 10:45pm on Saturday, Jan., 6, went to apartment number 19 of the same building where his former girlfriend Ç.G. was staying to have a conversation with her when the incident happened.

He then attacked the victim with a knife. 

He was arrested and taken to court on Sunday, Jan., 7 on charges of "attempted murder, causing of serious injury, property violation, illegal carrying of knives and violence against women".

Police officer who testified in court said the suspect went to his ex girlfriend's apartment over her new relationship. He then stabbed her in her lower left breast once, with a 23-centimeter knife he had with him and also attacked her new boyfriend, M.C., by cutting various parts of his body.

He was arrested at the scene of the incident and the knife in his possession taken as evidence.

C.G., who was taken to Topel State Hospital Emergency Service for treatment was discharged at receiving first aid while her boyfriend M.Ç. was operated on at Lefkosia State Hospital and was kept under observation in the surgical ward. Police said her life in not in danger.

Police stated that the investigation was continuing, that the suspect gave a voluntary statement, that this statement needed to be investigated, and that there were camera footage to be examined.

The suspect, who spoke after the police, said that he told his ex-girlfriend that he could have a relationship with anyone he wanted, provided that it was not someone from his circle, but M.Ç., is one of the friends he always sees. 

He said that he started a relationship with her, and that he lived this relationship with pride. The suspect said that on the day of the incident, M.Ç. first attacked and beat him, and stated that the knife belonged to him.

The judge ordered the suspect to be detained for 3 days initially for more investigation to be carried out. 

The suspect was brought back to court again on Wednesday. Noting that the investigation was completed, police said the crimes committed by the suspect were very serious.

Police stated that the suspect had student status in the country, but that there was a high possibility that he would receive a prison sentence if he was tried and that if released on bail before trial, he could escape trial.

The judge then ordered the suspect to be sent to prison for a period not exceeding 30 days until trial.
