Foreign national who stole from houses she went to clean in Lefkosia and Gonyeli sent to prison for 70 days, husband pleads on her behalf

A foreign national who was arrested for stealing from the houses she went to clean in North Cyprus has been sent to prison for 70 days.

The suspect, M.S, a Turkmenistan national, was arrested and taken to court in Lefkosia on January, 19 for stealing from the houses she went to clean in Lefkosia and Gönyeli,

She was sent to prison for 3 and 7 days consecutively for the purpose of investigation and was brought back to court again on January, 26.

Police said she stole jewelries worth 30,000 TL, 100 dollars in cash, 5 pounds and money found in the dresser drawer of the house belonging to one NB, 62 where the suspect went to do cleaning in Lefkosia on 17 November 2023. 

She also stole an 18 carat gold butterfly necklace worth 15,000 TL, a 22 carat gold hoop earring worth 15,000 TL and 400 TL cash from the house belonging to one female client which she kept in the dresser cupboard in the bedroom.

It was determined that the suspect stole an 18 carat gold necklace with a dotted stone motif from the house of another client in Gönyeli.

Police said she confessed to the crime and gave voluntary statement. She said she sent the gold she stole to Turkmenistan through her friend to pay her debts.

Police said during the search of the suspect's house in YeniĹźehir, many jewelries were found in the bedroom of the residence, and she could not give an account about the jewelries.

Police said the jewelries were shown to the complainants who were able to identify them.

Police said she has legal status in the country until December 14, 2024 due to her husband's work permit.

Police said investigation was continuing, but that the suspect can not influence the rest of the investigation, and requested that she be sent to prison before trial. The suspect's lawyer objected to the detention.

Her husband who spoke in court as her guarantor vouched she would not run away if released on bail adding that they have 3 children, the eldest of whom is 14 years old and the youngest is 4 years old, and that if his wife goes to prison, his 14-year-old daughter will be dragged into prostitution.

"I am working, I cannot take care of the children, my daughter will go astray, she will be dragged into prostitution," he said. He said his wife followed the devil and that he was not aware of the crimes she committed.

Announcing the court decision after the hearing, the judge ordered the suspect to be sent to prison for a period not more than 70 days.
