Student dies after he was hit by a drunk driver in north Cyprus
A foreign national died after being hit by a Turkish national who was driving under the influence of alcohol in Lefkosia on Wednesday night.
The accident took place on Osman Örek Street in Lefkcosia at around 11.45 pm when Hüseyin Bal, 25 who was driving under the influence of alcohol and without a driving licence struck Gabriel Shimata Kasongoo, 25, who was riding a bicycle in the same road.
The driver of the vehicle reportedly stopped 105 meters away after hitting the cyclist and the cyclist fell 56 meters away from the point of impact.
Kasongo, a Zambian national who was seriously injured in the accident was taken to the Lefkosia State Hospital but died despite all attempts to save his life.
The driver of the vehicle, Hüseyin Bal, was arrested.
A police investigation into that accident is under way.
