Plane returned back to Ercan Airport in north Cyprus barely 10 mins after departure as man arrested for violence

A plane that had left Ercan Airport en-route to Istanbul was returned back to north Cyprus because a person wanted in connection with a violence incident in Lefkosia was on the plane. 

According to media report on Wednesday, the Istanbul bound plane, which took off from Ercan Airport, at around 10:00am on Wednesday, Dec., 27, was brought back barely 10 minutes after departing in an operation carried out by the police.

A person who was a passenger on the plane in question was arrested on the grounds that he was involved in an armed attack in Lefkosia, north Cyprus.

According to the information obtained by Kıbrıs Postası, there was a disruption in flights due to the plane being brought back and two flights were cancelled.

Commenting on the incident, Turkish Cypriot police in a statement said, at around 7.15am on Wednesday, two shots were fired at a parked vehicle in the parking lot of an apartment building on Akın Başak Street in Lefkosia, causing material damage to the vehicle in question.

Within the scope of the further investigation carried out after the incident came to the notice of the police, one A.Y., 52, who was considered the suspect in the matter, was detected and arrested while he was about to go abroad from Ercan Airport.

There was no injury or loss of life in the incident.
