Explosion onboard ship off Famagusta in north Cyprus, two injured
An explosion rocked a tanker vessel transporting fuel from Turkiye to north Cyprus off the coast of Famagusta in north Cyprus on Tuesday.
According to Turkish Cypriot reports, a fire broke out on a ship outside the harbor in Kalecik. The fire was caused by a spark inside the ship.
Two individuals aboard the vessel, named Akasya, reported minor injuries.
North Cyprus’s coast guard promptly intervened and escorted the vessel to shore. The two injured individuals were transported to the nearest hospital for treatment.
The cause of the explosion remains unknown at this time, but sources indicate a work accident in the vessel’s engine room.
