The following are some of the major events to have occurred on November 7:

1916 – Jeannette Rankin becomes first woman elected to U.S. Congress.

1917 – Russian Bolsheviks under Vladimir Lenin overthrew the provisional government of Alexander Kerensky in Petrograd.

1931 - Chinese People's Republic proclaimed by Mao Zedong.

1944 – Franklin D. Roosevelt was re-elected for a record fourth term as U.S. president.

1962 – Eleanor Roosevelt, widow of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, died. She served for several years as a U.S. delegate to the United Nations.

1992 – Alexander Dubcek, the Czechoslovak leader who sought to instal “socialism with a human face” in the Prague Spring of 1968, put down by Soviet tanks, died from injuries suffered in a car crash.

2001 – The Belgian national airline Sabena filed for bankruptcy — the first European flag carrier to do so in the upheaval to the industry caused by the 9/11 attacks on the United States.

2002 – The population of Gibraltar overwhelmingly voted ‘No’ in a referendum on a British-Spanish plan to share sovereignty over the British colony.

2003 – In Colombia, pro-government congressman Arcangel Clavijo was killed by three gunmen outside Cali.

2007 – Jokela school shooting in Finland.

2016 – Musician Leonard Cohen dies.
