Today in History: Argentina surrenders to Great Britain, ending the 74-day Falklands Islands conflict
The following are some of the major events to have occurred on June 14:
1821 - Badi VII, king of Sennar, surrenders his throne and realm to Ismail Pasha, general of the Ottoman Empire, bringing the 300 year old Sudanese kingdom to an end.
1928 – Emmeline Pankhurst, English champion of women’s rights, died. An act establishing voting equality for men and women was passed just after her death.
1936 – The Soviet short-story writer, novelist and dramatist Maxim Gorky died.
1941 - Estonia loses 11,000 inhabitants as a consequence of mass deportations into Siberia.
1946 – John Logie Baird, the Scottish inventor who pioneered the development of television, died.
1971 – The New York Times began publication of extracts from top-secret Pentagon papers on the Vietnam War.
1982 - Argentina surrenders to Great Britain, ending the 74-day Falklands Islands conflict.
1994 – Henry Mancini, the American composer of soundtracks for the “Pink Panther” movies, “Days of Wine and Roses”, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and dozens of other hit films, died.
2004 – The British entrepreneur Richard Branson set a new world record by driving across the English Channel in a James-Bond style amphibious sports car in under two hours.
2005 – Charles Robert Jenkins, a former U.S. army sergeant who deserted to North Korea in 1965, returned to the United States for the first time in four decades.

2014 – Pro-Russian separatists shoot down Ukrainian army transport plane.
2017 – Fire at London’s Grenfell Tower apartment block leaves dozens dead.
