Dead baby whale found stranded off the sea of Karpaz in North Cyprus

A three-week-old dead Minke baby whale was found stranded off the sea of Karpaz in North Cyprus on Sunday.

According to a statement by Taşkent Nature Park; a dead baby Minke whale, estimated to be about 3 meters long, newborn and/or old enough to suckle, was found stranded in Karpaz on Sunday.

According to the Cyprus Wildlife Research Institute reported, it noted that this is the first-ever recorded stranding of a Minke whale in Cyprus.

Minke whales, one of the toothless whale species, are rarely seen in the Mediterranean. Adults can reach 8-9 meters and about 9 tons. This animal was also recorded as the first Minke Whale stranding incident on the island of Cyprus.

The dead baby whale was received to be brought to the Center with the devoted work of the DoğaPark teams for hours and the support provided from the region, upon the notification from the sensitive citizens.

Since the animal was observed to be decomposing, determining the exact cause of death is difficult due to the deterioration of the animal's condition.
