Woman die after she was hit by a drunk driver in Girne

A 46-year-old woman was killed in an accident in Girne in the early hours of Thursday morning after she was hit by a drunk driver while trying to cross the road.

Birsen Güleş, 46, was thrown into the opposite lane after she was hit by a car in front of another vehicle in an incident that happened at around 11:15pm on Wednesday, February, 1 on Bedrettin Demirel Street in Girne.

She was seriously injured in the accident and rushed to the hospital but died in the hospital.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, identified as Erdal Altunel, a Turkish Cypriot was driving carelessly on the double lane road under the influence of alcohol when he hit Birsen Güleş.

Birsen Güleş was thrown off the road to the opposite lane and landed in front of a vehicle that ran over her. Police said the driver of the second vehicle Mohd Sabet Said, 31 was carelessly at the time of the incident.

Both drivers were arrested.

With the death of Güleş, the lives lost due to traffic accident in 2023 rose to 5.
