Foreign national raped by 4 other inmates in prison

It has been alleged that a 19-year-old foreign national who was been detained at the Lefkosa central prison was raped by 4 inmates.

According to the report by local media, Yeniduzen, Aslı Murat, Chair of the Human Rights Committee of the Bar Association, stated that the 4 prisoners who were alleged to have raped the victim were removed from the ward and taken to the cell.

Murat emphasized that the allegation, which took place about a week ago, should be seriously addressed and investigated.

"Since this person is under the surveillance, security and control of the state, not only those who carry out the deed but also the administrators have a responsibility," Aslı Murat said.

The incident is expected to be taken to court within the week.

Responding to the incident, the Human Rights Committee of the Cyprus Turkish Bar Association requested an investigation into the matter..

A written statement made on behalf of the committee states; "We have come to our knowledge of the allegations that a detainee in the new prison was raped and beaten about a week ago by other convicts or detainees who are said to be staying in the same ward. This is an issue that needs to be investigated promptly and seriously. Since the person in question is under the supervision and control of the state, the state itself is responsible for his safety and protection against ill-treatment.
