This Day in History: Adolf Hitler appointed chancellor of Germany in 1933
The following are some of the major events to have occurred on January 30:
1933 – German President Paul von Hindenburg appointed Adolf Hitler chancellor. On this date in 1937, Hitler told the Reichstag that Germany was withdrawing its signature from the Versailles Treaty.
1948 – Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian nationalist non-violent movement against British rule, was assassinated by a Hindu extremist.
1973 – Gordon Liddy and James McCord were convicted of burglary, wiretapping and attempted bugging of the Democratic Party’s headquarters at the Watergate building in Washington.
1979 – White Rhodesians voted in a referendum in favour of a new constitution aimed at black majority rule in what is now Zimbabwe.
2000 – Protester runs onto centre court at men’s final of Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne.
2000 – Kenya airways Flight 431 crashes off coast of Ivory Coast.
2003 – Richard Reid, a British-born follower of Osama bin Laden, was sentenced to life in prison for trying to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight with explosives stuffed in his shoes.
2005 – Up to 8 million Iraqis cast ballots in the country’s first multi-party election in half a century, braving bombs and mortar attacks by insurgents.
2006 – Coretta Scott King, who came to the forefront of the fight for racial equality in America after her husband Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered in 1968, died.
2007 – Gordon Macklin, founder and former president of Nasdaq, died. He was 78.
2013 – Actress Lindsay Lohan attends a probation violation hearing in Los Angeles.
