Drunk driver injures pedestrian in accident in Famagusta
A 47-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured after he was hit by a drunk driver on the Famagusta-Karpaz Highway on Friday night.
The accident happened at around 9:30pm on Friday on the Famagusta-Karpaz Highway when 25-year-old Onur Armağan, who was driving under the influence of alcohol, hit a vehicle and pedestrian on the side of the road.
Police said Onur Armağan was driving in the opposite lane when he lost control of the steering and hit a vehicle, which was trying to stop to pick a pedestrian.
His vehicle was thrown forward due to the impact of the collision and then rolled over from the left side of the road. Before then, it also hit 47-year-old pedestrian, Hakan Kerek, who was on the side of the road.
Hakan Kerek was seriously injured, while the driver of the vehicle that was hit was slightly injured.
Hakan Kerek, was taken to the Famagusta State Hospital where he was observed in the intensive care unit after his surgery.
Onur Armağan was discharged and arrested after first aid treatment.
He was taken to court on Saturday where he asked for forgiveness from the court, saying, "I was not aware of it".
Armağan expressed his sadness and stated that he was a friend of Kelek, whom he injured in a collision with his vehicle.
He was given a 3 days detention order until trial.
