Student sentenced to 11 years in prison for drugs sales
A female student who was found guilty of carrying 12 kilograms and 350 grams of cannabis type drugs in 2020 has been sentenced to 11 years in prison by a Lefkosa court.
The judgement was delivered on Friday, December, 9.
The judge mentioned that the most severe case in drug cases is the importation of drugs.
The judge stated that the defendant's role was as a courier, and that they considered the judgement in her favor for admitting her guilt separately from the other 4 defendants and how the judgement will deprive a young child of her mother's affection.
Touching upon all the issues in favor and against the accused, the judge announced that he was unanimously sentenced to 11 years in prison.
What Happened?
The defendant, identified with the initials, KT along with 6 others all from Cameroon were arrested on November 11, 2020 after he was found carrying 12 kilograms and 350 grams of cannabis type drugs during an operation carried out by the narcotics teams.
He was taken to court along with four other suspects involved with the incident on charges of buying, giving, importing and saving drugs in Girne, Nicosia, Lefke and Famagusta.
At the time, police said they received information that two suspicious packages were sent from Gemikonağı to Kyrenia by a commercial vehicle. One of the suspect, who came to the address in Kyrenia where the packages were sent, tried to escape when he saw the police, and was caught using reasonable force after running 100 meters. The police stated that a substance believed to be a cannabis type drug weighing 1 kilo 750 grams was seized in the package in question.
In the investigation carried out on the arrested suspect, it was determined that those who delivered the drugs to the commercial taxi from Gemikonağı were the suspects 2 and 3. Suspects 2 and 3 were identified and arrested in Lefkosia.
Suspects 2 and 3 bought the drugs from suspect 4's residence leading to his arrest.
10 kilos of drugs in 17 packages and 5 kilos of drugs in 16 packages were found on suspect 4 during a search in his house.
It was determined that the drug was brought from Cameroon and imported to the country from Ercan Airport by one of the suspect.
