Cyprus parliament tables bill that allows one to legally change gender through easily accessible procedures

A bill paving the way for a Cypriot national to legally change gender with the introduction of easily accessible procedures has been tabled before parliament.

And Justice Minister Stefi Drakou told House Legal Committee MPs the bill safeguards every person’s right to legal recognition of gender identity without invasive procedures but on the basis of self-determination.

“This, after all, is every state’s contractual obligation,” she also said before describing the gender identity recognition law as ground breaking.

“With a non-complicated application submitted before the population and immigration registry and costing just 50 euro a person can change the registered gender data from official documents,” she said.

“And without having to undergo surgery, medical treatment or psychiatric consultation,” she added.

The bill also provides that this right can be exercised up to two times, but the applicant must not be married.

However, strongly against the proposed bill is the Church of Cyprus with Archimandrite Georgios Christodoulou telling MPs that sex change provokes society.
