Group of Nigerians release statement claiming that “Nigerians are safer in Northern Cyprus than in Northern Nigeria”
A group of Nigerian students under the aegis of Nigerian Community in Northern Cyprus (NCNC) has said "Nigerians are safer in Northern Cyprus than in Northern Nigeria."
The group led by its president, Isaac Ifetoluwa Ajayi, Lefkosia Coordinator, Daniel Oyelaja and some members from the Community gathered at around 4:00pm on Sunday in front of Hüseyin Ruso Stadium in Lefkosa.
The
group unfurled several banners in both Turkish and English reading:
“Nigerians are safer in Northern Cyprus than in Northern Nigeria”, “Stop
misinformation about Northern Cyprus”, “Cyprus Police are truly our
friends.”
The group in a press release by its president, Isaac Ifetoluwa Ajayi, emphasizing that the north of Cyprus is a safe country said; “Today, as the Nigerian Community, they have gathered here in Northern Cyprus to inform their country and the authorities in their country, and also to have the opportunity to tell their families that they are safe in Northern Cyprus.” “There is no question of killing Nigerians in Northern Cyprus,” he added.
He said that there is no such culture in Northern Cyprus. “People living in Northern Cyprus are safe, free from abduction, harassment, terrorism or killing,”
Pointing out that their problems here are high house fees, inflation, and the cost of living, Ajayi said, "They lost some Nigerian students due to natural death, there were some incidents among some Nigerian students in the past, but Northern Cyprus is a country free from violence."
Ajayi stated that they believe that NiDCOM President Abike Dabiri-Erewa's statements regarding Northern Cyprus are "caused by some students being misinformed".
NCNC Nicosia Coordinator Daniel Oyelaja also said, "The Nigerian community in Northern Cyprus says 'no' to misinformation," describing the statements of Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, about Northern Cyprus as "misinformation" and "unnecessary". “North Cyprus is safer than any part of Africa…We are in safe hands in Northern Cyprus,” Oyelaja said.
“All Nigerians living in this country and Northern Cyprus deserve an apology from Abike Dabiri for the concern this misinformation has caused among our friends and family,” Oyelaja said.
