Erdogan's call to the international community to "officially recognize the TRNC"
Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on world leaders to officially recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
Erdogan made the call during his speech at the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) held in New York, on Tuesday, September 20, 2022.
"We invite the international community to end the persecution of the Turkish Cypriots and to officially recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as soon as possible,” he said.
“We have always made good-willed efforts with the Turkish Republic of
Northern Cyprus to reach a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus
issue. It is known that there are two separate states and two different
peoples on the island today.”
“We invite the international
community to put an end to the persecution of the Turkish Cypriots, who
are trying to be separated from the world with embargoes in
contradiction with UN principles, and to recognize the Turkish Republic
of Northern Cyprus.”
"Our hope is that Greece's problematic
activities will be ended and that the EU will stop turning its back on
inhumane practices," Erdogan said.
"While Turkey defends its rights in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean to the end, it will never be deceived by those who follow a strategy of tension for their political purposes," Erdogan said.
“We expect Greece to put aside the politics of tension and provocation and listen to our calls for cooperation and solidarity,” Erdogan said.
Regarding the Greek crisis in his speech at the UN General Assembly, Erdoğan said, “Those who pursue a show of power make themselves look ridiculous. Maintaining peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean depends on respect for rights and law. We expect Greece to heed our call for cooperation and solidarity.”
