Majority of Turkish Cypriots believe corruption is rife in the TRNC
An overwhelming majority of people in north Cyprus believe that corruption has increased over the past year, while a staggering 90 per cent of those questioned do not trust the government
According to the report by Yeniduzen on Friday last week, “90 per cent of the public do not trust the ‘government’ and 86 per cent consider its performance to be poor,”
The report reflects the experiences and views of ordinary Turkish Cypriots living in the TRNC on corruption.
The results show that 89 per cent of respondents said that corruption is a big or very big problem in the TRNC.
According to respondents, appointed authorities are the most corrupt. 56 per cent of respondents believe that members of the government are corrupt”.
Additionally, the ‘courts’, the European Union and ‘local government’ stand out in terms of trust in the institutions.
While trust in the ‘government’ is limited to 11 per cent, trust in the ‘courts’ is 59 per cent, in the European Union 58 per cent and in ‘local government’ 50 per cent.
The “Corruption Barometer 2021” report was prepared with the support of the British High Commission, is based on a survey conducted by Metron Research in November and December 2021 on a sample of 1,000 people.
The publication points out that the Corruption Barometer report was prepared in accordance with the methodology of transparency international.
