Student arrested for paying taxi operator with fake dollar in Lefkosa

A young man who paid a taxi operator with fake dollar bill in Lefkosa has been arrested.

The incident happened on Tuesday, May, 10 in Lefkosa when the suspect took a taxi home.

The suspect, a student in the island and identified only as C.F, 23, gave a taxi driver, a fake $100 note with serial number FE52339545 in exchange for a taxi fare of 120 TL.

He was arrested and taken to court on Wednesday on charges of  “Saving Counterfeit Banknotes, Circulating Counterfeit Banknotes and Obtaining Credit by False Behavior

His home was searched with a pending warrant, but nothing illegal was found.  

The suspect in a verbal statement told the police he had received the money in Lefkosa on May, 8 from an unknown person.

Police said the suspect came into the country on April, 29, 2021 with a 60-day visa and did not undergo any immigration procedures.  

Police are searching for a second person related with the incident.

The suspect was detained for two days on court order pending trial.
