African women blamed for over crowing in south Cyprus prisons

The women’s wing in an overcrowded prison in Nicosia, south Cyprus is in a shocking state due to the increasing number of prisoners there and some are blaming it on women from Africa.

Some of the women are forced to sleep on the floor since there are no available beds.

According to report from the south, relatives of some Greek Cypriots detainees have said the problem is exacerbated by the increasing number of women from African countries sent to prison after failed attempts to leave Cyprus on forged travel documents.

It was noted that, out of the 90 women currently behind bars in Nicosia prisons, 65 are from the Republic of Congo.

Some of them have been sentenced to between 5 to 10 months in prison for crimes punishable by an administrative fine – as is the case in other European countries.
