Human Rights Society demands the recognition of TRNC
The TRNC Human Rights Society (IHD) has called on the UN and the EU to recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on the basis of human rights.
In a press conference held on Thursday on the occasion of December 10 International Human Rights Day, the Society President Hasan Yılmaz Işık said that the recognition of the TRNC was the only option for protecting the peace in the Eastern Mediterranean.
“Within the framework of human rights, we want the UN and the EU to respect and recognize the independence of the Turkish Cypriot people,” he said.
Işık added that the international community’s insistence on reaching a federal solution in Cyprus while continuing to impose embargoes on the Turkish Cypriot people was unacceptable.
He also said that attempts to impose the so-called Republic of Cyprus which has become a Greek Cypriot state after 1963 on the Turkish Cypriots was also in violation of human rights, UN principles and the laws of the partnership state.
