Monday is public holiday in North Cyprus
Monday, October, 18 is public holiday in Northern Cyprus and Turkey to celebrate Mevlid Kandili, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad.
Mevlid Kandili, is known as one of the most important days of the Islamic world. According to the religious calendar in 2021, Mevlid Kandili falls on a Sunday and was celebrated on Sunday, October 17, 2021.
In a statement by the TRNC Religious Affairs
Department, Mevlid Kandili special Program will be
held on Sunday night at the Hala Sultan Mosque in Haspolat. Prayer and mevlit programs will be held in all other mosques.
Due to the day falling on a Sunday, Monday will be observed as public holiday in the TRNC.
***Mawlid, is the observance of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad
which is commemorated in Rabi' al-awwal, the third month in the Islamic
calendar. 12th Rabi' al-awwal is the accepted date among most of the
Sunni scholars, while most Shia scholars regard 17th Rabi' al-awwal as
the accepted date. Mevlid Kandili is celebrated every year 10-11 days earlier than the previous year.
