Man beats wife for filing a divorce case against him in Gonyeli, North Cyprus
A man identified only as A.Z was arrested in Gonyeli, north Cyprus for allegedly battering his wife on the grounds that she want to file a divorce case against him.
The suspect was brought before a court in Lefkosa on Wednesday for on charges of "unlawful carrying of knife, threat of violence, and assault".
The incident happened in Gonyeli at about 9:54pm on Tuesday, August, 10.
Police officer who testified in court said the suspect entered the house belonging to his wife with a knife at around 9:54 pm on August 10, because she said she would file a divorce case against him.
He threatened his wife saying, "If you divorce me, you're done, and there's no turning back for me anymore," following which he battered her and pulled her hair.
His wife was checked by a doctor on the same day, with report showing that there were no signs of assault or force on her body.
The suspect was identified and arrested on the same day. The suspect handed over the knife he used in the incident to the police.
Police said the suspect is a citizen of Turkmenistan and is in the TRNC with a work permit.
Court Judge, Hazal Hacımulla ordered the suspect to be released on bail pending trial, on the condition that he be banned from going abroad, deposit 10 thousand TL in cash, and appear in a police station at least two days a week.
