TRNC celebrates 47th anniversary of Turkish Peace Operation, President Erdoğan to attend
The 47th anniversary of the Turkish Peace Operation in Cyprus is being marked with various ceremonies and events in North Cyprus this week.
The annual celebrations kicked off on Monday with a 21-gun salute followed by a speech delivered by TRNC President, Ersin Tatar.
Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will take part in this year’s celebrations which coincides with the four-day Kurban Bayramı or Feast of Sacrifice.
President Erdoğan who will be arriving in the TRNC on Monday will be addressing a special session of the TRNC parliament at 3:45 in the afternoon.
The annual dawn vigil held at the Yavuz Çıkarma beach where Turkish forces first landed on July 20, 1974, will take place on Monday night.
Laser and light shows will take place during the vigil which will end with morning prayers.
The world-famous Turkish aerobatics team, the Türk Yıldızları (Turkish Stars) will also be performing a show during Tuesday’s main parade ceremony in Lefkoşa.
Ceremonies on Tuesday will begin at the Atatürk Monument in Lefkoşa and the Lefkoşa Martyrs Monument.
The main ceremony will take place at the Dr Fazıl Küçük boulevard Lefkoşa where President Ersin Tatar and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will salute military and civilian units at the parade.
A variety of sports competitions are also taking place over the next two days. The TRNC national basketball team will be playing a friendly game with the Kyrgyzstan national team.
