Nine months jail term for foreigner who assaulted and injured flatmate
A foreigner living in the TRNC has been sentenced to 9 months in prison for assaulting and inflicting injuries on a fellow at their apartment in Lefkosa.
The incident between the accused, an African student and the victim, a Bangladeshi worker happened in Başkent Pansiyon, operating in the Surlariçi region on March, 23, 2021.
The defendant was arrested and taken to a court in Lefkosa for punching and throwing of knife at the victim over cooking issues in the apartment. The victim was injured in the incident.
Police report said they were having an argument over cooking when the defendant attacked the victim.
Delivering his judgement, the court Judge Temay Sağer stated that such crimes cause concern and anxiety in the society and that it is important to give deterrent penalties in order to prevent them.
Sağer emphasized that the defendant severely hit the complainant, who was staying in the same apartment, by first punching and then hitting the neck with a knife as a result of the discussion, and that these factors were considered as aggravating factors against the suspect.
Stating that deterrent and exemplary punishments have an important place in preventing these crimes, Sağer announced that the defendant was sentenced to 9 months in prison.
