4.5 magnitude earthquake hit Ankara, Turkey
A shallow magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported late at night near Elmadağ, Ankara, Turkey on Sunday.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit Ankara at about 10:53 pm local time on Sunday 10 January 2021 at a shallow depth of 10 km.
Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface.
The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A report from the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) listed the quake at magnitude 4.7.
A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
The quake should have been felt as light shaking in Elmadağ with a population of 25,400 people located 7 km from the epicenter.
