Student who went to police to report a case of assault arrested for living in the TRNC illegally

He went to the station to report a case of assault but ended up in jail for living in the country illegally.  

A student who went to a police station in Kyrenia to report a case of assault has been arrested and sent to prison for living in the TRNC illegally.  

The victim with the initials M.I reportedly went to the police station in Kyrenia on Wednesday, December, 23 to file a complaint that he was beaten by an unidentified person(s) only to be arrested and detained after police went through his immigration record and found out that he has been living in the TRNC illegally.  

He was taken to a court in Kyrenia on Friday on charges of  living in the country illegally.  

The police stated that during the control, it was seen that the suspect had been without a residence permit in the TRNC since 9 September 2015.    

The police stated that the suspect was detained and an investigation was launched against him, and that he was taken to the court on 24 December 2020 and a one-day detention order was received.  

Noting that dismissal procedures have also been initiated against the suspect, the police also said that he made some statements and that his allegations would be investigated and asked for an additional 7 days of detention.  

Judge Özge Uğraşın ordered that the suspect be detained for 7 more days.
